Gator Bait

Blurb:
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the fifth book in the hilarious Miss Fortune series.

Things are starting to look up for Fortune Redding. Even though her life was at stake, the CIA assassin had balked at taking on a new identity in Sinful, Louisiana. But instead of hating it like she’d thought she would, Fortune now has friends she cares about and just finished up an incredible first date with the sexiest deputy in the state. Sure, there’s been a murder or two that she’s gotten mixed up in since she arrived in town, but she’s hoping all of that is behind her.

But when someone almost kills Deputy Carter LeBlanc, Fortune tosses her dreams of peace and quiet into the muddy bayou and shifts back into being the deadly trained professional that she is. With the help of Ida Belle and Gertie, Fortune launches a manhunt, intending to find a killer before he tries again.

About Jana:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won’t find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get to by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.
Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottomed aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these “studies,” but they kept makers of peroxide in business.
Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she’s still hopeful.
She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.

Missing in Mudbug (Ghost-in-Law Mystery #5) by Jana DeLeon

Missing in Mudbug

(I purchased this book.)

Blurb:
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, a new release in the Ghost-in-Law series.
After an eventful first week on the job, Game Warden Jadyn St. James is happy the small bayou town of Mudbug, Louisiana, seems to have fallen back into its normal routine. But when FBI agent Raissa Bordeaux is kidnapped, Jadyn is certain the short-lived peace has come to an abrupt end. Statistics don’t lie, and Jadyn knows that the longer Raissa remains missing, the less likely she’ll be found alive.
Sheriff Colt Bertrand knows the FBI won’t let him participate in their investigation, but is certain the federal agents aren’t as qualified as he is to locate someone missing in the swamps surrounding Mudbug. And although he’s been avoiding the beautiful game warden, Colt is sure that teaming up with Jadyn gives him the best chance of finding Raissa.
With the clock ticking, Colt and Jadyn defy FBI orders and launch their search, but can they find Raissa before it’s too late?

Review:
Have you read Jana DeLeon's Mudbug series yet? If not, why not? They are fast, funny and fabulous!
Missing in Mudbug is the latest in the series, and it continues the adventures (and desperately ignored sexual attraction) of Jadyn and Colt as they search for the missing Raissa.  Although they keep it completely professional, the whole town can see these two have the hots for each other.  But that's on the backburner as the Mudbug gang of Luc, Maryse, Mildred, Helena and the usual delightful cast of characters from the town concentrate on finding Raissa.  Although they did manage to share one very romantic, very sexy kiss........
The tone of this book was a little more serious than previous ones, which worked with the slightly grittier plot, but there were still several laugh-out-loud moments, and I was up until midnight hanging out with my friends from Mudbug!

SWAMP SNIPER (Miss Fortune Series #3) by Jana DeLeon

Swamp Sniper

(I bought this book.)

BLURB:
When only a crack shot will do…

In the two weeks CIA assassin Fortune Redding has been hiding in Sinful, Louisiana, she’s been harassed, poisoned, and shot at…and that was the easy part. But now, she’s about to face her biggest challenge since setting foot in the tiny bayou town.

When mayoral candidate Ted Williams is murdered, everyone is surprised. Ted was a blowhole and a Yankee, but those usually weren’t good reasons to kill someone. When Sinful Ladies Society leader Ida Belle becomes the lead suspect in the crime, Fortune knows she’s got to solve a murder and save one of the only friends she’s ever had.

But as the investigation begins, more and more secrets surface, and Fortune realizes that sometimes nothing is as it seems.

REVIEW:   My happy place is hanging out with Fortune, Gerti and Ida Belle in Sinful, Louisiana. Those three attract trouble, murder and mayhem like peanut butter attracts raccoons, and I can't get enough.  Fortune is a hoot, as she tries to maintain her cover as a beauty-contest-winning librarian, when in reality she's a wanted CIA assassin in hiding.  Fortune was raised by a legendary CIA agent father who may have been a sociopath as well, and she has no clue how to be "normal".  Her whole life has been about training and missions.  Trying to adjust to friendships, her attraction to the hunky local sheriff, and living a normal civilian life is almost too much for her.  But luckily she's hiding out in Sinful, so the definition of a "normal" life is pretty flexible, and usually involves firearms.
Ida Belle and Gerti are perfect friends and companions for Fortune.  As former Vietnam-era government operatives, both ladies "get" her and this fabulous trio treat every event and social opportunity like a potentially deadly mission.
This third installment of the series finds Ida Belle framed for the murder of a mayoral candidate.  It's up to Gerti and Fortune to clear Ida Belle's name by discovering the real murderer, all while avoiding Carter.  In the process of running their own investigation, Fortune gets her foot trapped in the sheriff's toilet, shoots out her own windows, Gerti has more tree mishaps, Marie joins the gang as a provisional member (she's too nervous to make a full-fledged agent) and Fortune acknowledges her fledgling emotions.  Par for the course for this group.

If you need an escape, a distraction, a laugh (or ten), then read this series!

THE REUNION - Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance Trilogy #3 (Harlequin Intrigue #1452) by Jana DeLeon

The Reunion / The Secret of Cypriere Bayou (Harlequin Intrigue Series #1452)
(I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for review consideration.)

Blurb:
An heiress comes home to terror in New York Times bestselling author Jana DeLeon's Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance miniseries.
Bodyguard to an heiress is Tyler Duhan's idea of hell. The steely, sexy ex-marine has heard—and dismissed—the gossip about the haunted old LeBeau mansion and its "cursed" heiresses. Now the middle sibling—headstrong Joelle—has arrived to comply with her mother's will and reunite with her long-lost sisters.
But no sooner does she move into the house, than Joelle falls prey to terrifying threats and mysterious visions. Tyler, though he's sworn off femme fatales, can't deny his feelings for the Creole beauty. Nor can he let passion distract him. Because falling for Joelle could be a fatal mistake—for them both.

Review:
What a satisfying end to this trilogy!  Jana has described her romantic suspense stories as Gothic-lite and it's the perfect description.  The Reunion is deliciously creepy and spooky, with an air of menace that nicely complements the sexy and intense attraction between Joelle and Tyler.  Tyler is the perfect addition as the third hero in the series for the middle LeBeau sister.  He's a hometown boy who's been away for years, and has returned a strong, scarred man to help is father.  But he never anticipated being asked to bodyguard the beautiful Joelle, and she doesn't need or want a prickly stranger near her 24/7 - even one as hunky as Tyler.
The ending had a surprise twist, especially after events of the first two books, but it was handled nicely and created a satisfying resolution.
If you love romantic suspense with a touch of the paranormal then pick up this trilogy - it's the perfect thing to read on a cool October night while safely tucked into bed!

The Betrayed (Mystere Parish:Family Ineritance) by Jana DeLeon (Harlequin Intrigue #1447)

The Betrayed (Harlequin Intrigue Series #1447)

(I purchased this book.)

Blurb:
A man undercover must reveal the truth in the swamps in the continuation of USA TODAY bestselling author Jana DeLeon's Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance.
One day on the job and contractor Zach Sargent is ready to believe the dilapidated old LeBeau mansion is haunted. Some intruder—earthly or not—is threatening the youngest LeBeau sister, back to claim her inheritance. And though Danae keeps her distance from the sexy hired hand, he falls for her in a heartbeat.
Like Danae, Zach has come back to Calais in need of answers to troubling questions about the LeBeau family past. But Danae must never know who he really is and he can't let his attraction to her stop his search…or else a decades-old evil will claim a new victim.

Review:
This is the second book in Jana Deleon's Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance series for Harlequin Intrigue. (Click here for my review of the first book, The Accused.)
A solid mystery with a sexy, tender romance and a touch of the paranormal,  The Betrayed follows the youngest of the three sisters, Danae, who was only two years old when the girls' evil stepfather sent them away to be raised by distant relatives.  Danae has arrived in Calais under an assumed name,  and she feels an instant connection to Alaina, eventually gathering her courage to reveal her identity.
Hired by the family attorney to go through the mountains of paperwork kept by the stepfather, Danae goes to the mansion to begin her task and hopefully reconnect with her birthplace.  Once there she meets Zach, the hunky contractor hired to make repairs, who has secrets of his own linking him to Danae's mother and stepfather.
Zach and Danae quickly  recognize a strong mutual attraction, at the same time they realize they're not alone in the spooky old mansion.  The intensified sense of menace pushes Zach and Danae into mutual support mode, as they stay together for protection while trying to get their work done.  Pretty soon their individual desires to find answers in the paperwork takes a backseat to staying safe, and the time spent together under pressure electrifies their attraction and their trust in one another.  The romance is sweet and tentative, and completely sexy.

The menacing atmosphere and strange events at the mansion, shadowed by the recent attack on Alaina, combine to create a pressure-cooker of intensity that make this the perfect book for reading late into the night, while safely tucked into bed.

The Accused (Harlequin Intrigue Series #1441) by Jana DeLeon

The Accused (Harlequin Intrigue Series #1441)
(I purchased this book.)

Blurb:
USA TODAY bestselling author Jana DeLeon has a new trilogy—Mystere Parish: Family Inheritance.
After working as a cop in New Orleans, Carter Trahan is back in Mystere Parish, where his latest assignment seems like a joke: making sure Alaina LeBeau lives in her childhood home for two weeks to comply with her mother's will. But soon the sexy sheriff isn't laughing. Someone—or something—is stalking the beautiful defense lawyer, turning her once-grand mansion into a house of horrors.
But as he searches for the truth, Carter must face ghosts of his own past lurking in the bayou. Most troubling of all is his unprofessional attraction to the woman he's protecting, as Alaina's allure haunts him as no specter ever could….

Review:
Chills, goosebumps and a sexy bayou romance highlight this great mystery by Jana DeLeon.
Alaina conditionally inherits an incredible mansion in the swamps of Mystere Parish on the same day she resigns from her position at a prestigious Baton Rouge law firm.  She's fed up with the politics of her firm, and crippled by the guilt and self-doubt caused by her first criminal case.
Returning to the small-town of Calais and the mansion where she lived until the age of seven, Alaina must live in the house for 14 days, as must her two sisters, for them to inherit the house and her mother's estate.  The catch is that when her mother died, Alaina's rotten step-father sent the sisters to distant relatives and they've had no contact for the last 25 years.  But Alaina figures she's got nothing to lose and returning to her childhood home might set some ghosts to rest.  The opposite is true, however, and Alaina's arrival seems to trigger ghostly activity and long-lost memories.  Not all the activity is ghostly, though, as Alaina discovers signs that somebody has been in the house, and soon it appears that her life is in danger.
The local sheriff had been emotionally blackmailed into monitoring Alaina's daily presence to meet the terms of the will, and initially he thinks she's a cold city lawyer.  But as they spend time together and relize the danger is real, Alaina opens up to Carter and they discover a sizzling mutual attraction.
As strong as the story and characters are, however, the ending is weak and felt incomplete.  I don't want to spoil it for others so won't give away names, but the guilty party had a very tenuous motivation to kill Alaina, and it's never explained how he knew about the secret entrances to the mansion, which made it possible for him to sneak around.  And the paranormal element, so beautifully and deftly interwoven with the mystery (to the point where I got actual goosebumps reading the book), was barely mentioned at the end, although it played a significant part in the finale.
