BLURB:
Officer Gabriella Maria Flores desperately needs a big win to save her
career. A case that proves that she has her act together, something
non-controversial to make people forget the recent scandal she's been
involved in. Instead, the murder she catches couldn't be more
high-profile, the number one suspect her boss's brother. Means, motive,
opportunity--check. And open-and-shut case, if she's ever seen one. But
then, instead of arresting the suspect, why is she falling in love with
him?

REVIEW:
Dana Marton's Broslin Creek series is a wonderful reading treat, because after reading the FREE first book in the series, DEATHWATCH, you realize there are more books to read so you can stay in the world of Broslin Creek longer. She writes a distinctive and oh-so-readable blend of well-crafted mystery, believable romance, and characters who feel like friends, all packaged in a fast-paced well-written style with Dana's distinctive splashes of humor.
DEATHWISH is no exception. It starts with an intense military mission in Afghanistan as Hunter leads a team to rescue a fellow soldier. Shortly after he returns to the States to resume life as a civilian, planning on proposing to his long-term girlfriend. But the night of his homecoming party at his brother's (Ethan Bing, Chief of Police) ends with Hunter accused of his girlfriend's murder. Gabi, the newest officer on the police force gets stuck with the case as the only cop in town with no personal relationship with the accused.
I connected to Hunter and Gabi right away. Dana Marton is so good at
creating characters who are both believable and worthy of being a story
hero/heroine. They feel so real to me. Hunter is everything a romance hero should be - handsome, strong, smart, self-deprecating, and kind. And Gabi is the perfectly balanced heroine - I wanted to be her strong kick-ass, capable self and I also rooted for her as a friend, hoping she'd solve the murder, show everyone what a great cop she is, and get the guy. Gabi is also a rather unique heroine - she is all about the job, and her focus on being better at the job. She doesn't wear makeup or girly clothes, can't cook, and doesn't decorate. She's easy to be around, and Hunter is shocked at his response to her, because he thought he wanted a feminine, soft, homemaker type gal.

Towards the end, as Gabi's life is in danger and she's fighting to escape the killer, my heart rate actually went up I was so
into it. And the Christmas backdrop/timeframe is beautifully
incorporated - it felt like pretty holiday background music setting the
tone of the book. When there wasn't murder, assault and mayhem, of course:-)
Blurb:
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the fifth book in the hilarious Miss Fortune series.

Things are starting to look up for Fortune Redding. Even though her
life was at stake, the CIA assassin had balked at taking on a new
identity in Sinful, Louisiana. But instead of hating it like she’d
thought she would, Fortune now has friends she cares about and just
finished up an incredible first date with the sexiest deputy in the
state. Sure, there’s been a murder or two that she’s gotten mixed up in
since she arrived in town, but she’s hoping all of that is behind her.

But when someone almost kills Deputy Carter LeBlanc, Fortune tosses
her dreams of peace and quiet into the muddy bayou and shifts back into
being the deadly trained professional that she is. With the help of Ida
Belle and Gertie, Fortune launches a manhunt, intending to find a killer
before he tries again.

About Jana:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was
raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown
is Carlyss, but you probably won’t find it on a map. Her family owned a
camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only
get to by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging
in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana
spent many hours reading books.
Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a
flat-bottomed aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many
birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals
were injured during these “studies,” but they kept makers of peroxide
in business.
Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she’s still hopeful.
She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.

The worst time to be charged with murder is:

A. When you have no alibi for the night in question.
B. When you have no memory of the night in question.
C. When you told people you hated the victim.
D. When the detective is the 1st guy you ever slept with--which didn't end well.

Check all of the above for Luanne Mayfair. If it wasn't for bad
luck, she wouldn't have any luck at all. Okay, maybe a little luck. As
it turns out, Detective Chase Merritt doesn't hold grudges.

He still looks at Luanne just as he did in high school, except he's
grown some serious 'hot cop' muscles--very distracting when Luanne is
trying to avoid the very law Chase represents.

Is she the killer? Is she being framed? Is she the next victim? As
Chase and Luanne race to find some answers, danger and heat ratchet up
in this fast-paced romantic mystery that will stop your heart one
second, then steal it in the next.
Blurb:
Since moving to beautiful Cedar Tree, Colorado, Emma Young, mother of
one adult daughter, has worked from home doing some online bookkeeping
and baking for her best friend's diner to supplement her disability
pension. Life has been pretty good, that is until she received a strange
phone call that starts an alarming chain of events.

Investigator Gus Flemming is hot on the trail of a bail skip with
organized crime connections that bring him to Cedar Tree. Once there,
the focus of his investigation lands squarely on the gently rounded
shoulders of a vivacious red haired Emma, whose physical limitations
have done nothing to dampen her zest for life.

When it becomes clear that Emma is at risk, Gus does't hesitate to
step in and protect her. Call it a job with some very hot benefits......

Review:
Slim to None is the first book by author Freya Barker, and it was a delightful, steamy surprise. It features a smart, feisty, sexy heroine and a gruff, rough, sweetheart of a hero.
The book starts with one hell of a sexy wrong number, waking up Emma's dormant libido. Emma has been so busy living her life, she hasn't made room for intimacy in her life. Shortly after the phone call Emma's life is turned completely upside down as she finds herself mixed up in a criminal investigation as the target of a desperate bad guy. The suspense starts right away and keeps the story moving and everyone guessing.

I loved Emma. She's stubborn, smart, brave, and wants to do the right thing. And the red-hot romance with Gus, one of the most
open-minded, loving and kind heroes I have ever read, was so sweet, steamy, sexy and romantic - the whole package. I loved that her physical disability was coincidental to the story, and not the focus. As someone who has similar issues, I found the plot believable and realistic, making the story even better and more intense, keeping me reading way past my bedtime.

Next, please!
Blurb:
When good fails, chaos rises to the challenge.
The daily life of a chaos demon is delightfully sinful—overindulging
in Sri Lankan delicacies, trespassing on private beaches in Hawaii, and
getting soused at the best angel bar on the planet. But when Bedlam
learns that the archdemon Azrael has escaped from the Abyss in order to
wreak vengeance against the person who sent her there—Bedlam’s best
friend, Khet—he can’t sit idly by.
Only one relic possesses the power to kill Khet, who suffers
immortality at Lucifer’s request: the mythical Spear of Destiny, which
pierced Christ’s side at His crucifixion. Neither angel nor demon has
seen the Spear in two thousand years, but Azrael claims to know its
location. Bedlam has no choice but to interpret woefully outdated clues
and race her to its ancient resting place.
His quest is made nearly impossible by the interference of a
persnickety archivist, Keziel—his angelic ex—and a dedicated cult intent
on keeping the Spear out of the wrong hands. But to Bedlam, “wrong” is
just an arbitrary word, and there’s no way he’s letting Khet die without
a fight.

Review:
Lucky me! I jumped at the chance to review Raising Chaos (Book Two: Earthbound Angels) because I really liked Oracle of Philadelphia (See my review HERE).
The author has created a fascinating world full of ancient sects, secrets, quests, prophecies, and an angelic and demonic hierarchy complete with all the petty bitchiness of any human version. One of the best things about these books is the relationship between the angels, fallen angels, and demons. Corrigan does a dandy job of deftly creating shades of gray when it comes to the motives and ethical decisions of all of them.
RAISING CHAOS is told through the alternating viewpoints of Bedlam, Siren and Khet, as the angels race to find the Spear, while Khet (Caela) takes a sabbatical of sorts and finds out her new neighbor is a violent sociopath.
Bedlam is still delightfully irreverent, impulsive and nutty but full of heart and stream-of-consciousness thoughts - he's a great counterpoint to the serious, bureaucratic-type angels who adhere to their roles without thought. Siren is the exception. As the Angel of Truth, she knows when she speaks a lie, and as she chases Bedlam and the Spear, she begins to realize that there's more going on in the world and the heavens than anyone realizes, and an apocalypse may be at hand. Meeting up with Mephistopheles causes her to remember the horrors of the nephilim purge ordered by Michael and Lucifer. They share memories of the past, and Biblical history is added in to the angel's history, creating the best, most believable, most cohesive kind of world - part fantasy and part reality (or religious history in this case). As Bedlam completes the strange tasks to advance the quest and be considered the angel Jesus foretold ad gain possession of the Spear, Khet struggles to navigate the waters of a resort town and save a girl from a killer.
The book was really hard to put down - and what an ending! I can't wait for the next book.
In this short story it is the fall of 1879 and San Francisco swelters
under a heat wave while Barbara Hewitt, a reserved schoolteacher,
uncovers a mystery with the help of her son's Boston Terrier, Dandy.
This story is set in the gas-lit world created by Locke in her Victorian San Francisco Mystery series, which includes Maids of Misfortune, Uneasy Spirits, Bloody Lessons, and the short story "The Misses Moffet Mend a Marriage".

Review:
After reviewing Maids of Misfortune and Uneasy Spirits here on my blog, I found Dandy Detects to be a delightful
window into Barbara's life and mindset. Previously a minor character living in Annie's boarding house, we learn the reason Barbara is wary and somewhat reserved. It was also interesting to view Annie and her boardinghouse from a resident's perspective.
The basis of this short story (just 41 minutes for the audiobook) is the mysterious disappearance of a neighbor woman and her dog. Barbara has made a real effort to meet the neighbor, feeling a kinship with her circumstances, but when she disappears after one hot night, Dandy's behavior supports Barbara's fears.
The narrator, Alexandra Haag, has a nice, rich,
soothing voice, although at times I was distracted by what was almost a
robotic quality of careful enunciation and steady tone. But overall, I
thought she did a great job.
Review:
There are 6 books in this series written under the pseudonym Sebastian Rook, although I could only find pictures of the first 3. Published by Scholastic, I bought this for myself (um, I mean my son) through his school's Scholastic book order form (remember those? LOVE!).
Anyway, he read this and really enjoyed it and I can see why. It's a well-written classic adventure, with three 12 year old heroes who are trying to defeat a powerful Mayan vampire god who is running amok in London. The writing is never simplistic, bad things happen, and the kids have to use every bit of intelligence, cunning, street smarts, and courage to defeat true evil. Along the way they discover the true value of friendship (it will save you from a vampire minion's clutches), and that doing the right thing is never easy.
The setting is 1850 London, and Vampire Plagues depicts the city in all its dual horrible glory. Jack is a street child who makes his home near the port, and his life is miserable and dangerous. Ben and Emily are children of the wealthy class, living in a luxurious home with servants who follow their instructions. Yet the three of them find common ground in their courage, fear, friendship, and willingness to do what must be done. By then end of the story they have formed a new version of a family, suffering great loss and great triumph. Very well done!
Review:
Oh, I had such high hopes for this book - I absolutely loved the intro before Chapter 1:

I'm Clara Lord. I own Bloodlines Tattoo Parlor, have a filthy mouth, no filter, and a really strong objection to bossy idiots, pet names and wealthy men. You will hate me, love me or love to hate me but either way it doesn't matter. Everything I touch turns to crap and it's all my own fault.

Doesn't she sound fun? Tough, insightful, and pessimistic, with an independent streak a mile wide. But that impression was gone in the first few pages, and replaced with a whiny, self-centered hypocrite who uses men for personal gain, creates drama and hurts people just because she has a painful secret. Add to that the fact that Clara doesn't speak, say, talk, mention, exclaim or explain -
she "growls", "snarks", "smirks" and "snits" her sentences, which came off as an affectation rather than a descriptive tool.
Clara is one of the most unlikeable heroines I've ever read (and I've read some great books with not so likeable heroines, like Sarah Gran's Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead - that was a gritty, tough, well-written book with a heroine with zero Kardashian/stripper-culture tones). Clara is selfish, childish, emotionally immature, and a slutty-manipulative brat. The book starts with Clara spending a weekend with her girlfriends in Boston. They're slamming drinks and declaring sisterhood, while dancing and barhopping. Clara is apparently so magnetic, sexy and gorgeous that the most eligible billionaire in the country sees her dancing and comes up to her and starts grinding and coming on to her. Clara HATES rich people and even though her friends ooh and ahh over Dominic, the girls leave the club to avoid him, and, undeterred by their blatant and insulting rejection, he follows them (creepy stalker vibes starting to manifest here). Soon after, Clara's friends desert her on the street (drunk and ready to puke and pass out), letting Dominic take Clara home. Great friends, huh? And this is just the first few pages.
After this delightful weekend, Clara heads home to Virginia where we learn she has an 8 year old daughter and lives with a great guy named Sawyer who's in love with her (but she doesn't love him - they have a complicated past which basically means she uses Sawyer for rent, parenting and business). They're raising her daughter together, and own/operate a tattoo parlor together as well. Clara stays because it's comfortable and easy and they have great sex 4 times a year. Sawyer is steady, loving, kind and a good man, so it was kind of hard to believe he loved Clara as much as he does,
Dominic soon shows up in Clara's small town (more creepy stalker vibes), because after she told him off (again) in Boston they still have undeniable, obsessive attraction for each other. Which just feeds in to Clara's incredible confidence in her attractiveness. We know this because she doesn't walk, she "struts" and "prowls". And this is when we learn that suave gazillionaire Dominic loves tattoos! What a coincidence. Soon there's a lot of posturing and growling between Dom and Sawyer, and Clara continues to fret about her hatred of rich folks, her freakishly incredible chemistry with Dom, and her relationship with Sawyer.
Pretty soon Clara's hypocritical side comes out again. She keeps saying she hates rich people (she had a wealthy fiance who wanted to mold her into his perfect arm-candy/Stepford wife) and the need to look and behave a certain way in their company, but when Dom buys her clothes and invites her to accompany him to a swanky society function, she happily accepts his lavish gifts and goes (but she wears her cowboy boots with the gown in a pathetic and immature attempt to be a rebel and prove she's not "one of them"). So why did she accept his gifts? Clara wants it both ways - she keeps the expensive presents but refuses to be gracious or appreciative. Rather, she acts belligerently to prove he hasn't bought her with his expensive gifts. She happily takes advantage of Dom's generosity like she takes advantage of Sawyer's emotional support. She's a user and an embarrassment to women. When did this kind of behavior become an acceptable manifestation of emotional pain, rather than the straight-up greedy, self-centered grasping materialism that it is?
While I appreciated the painful background Clara is running from, and it did explain the origin (but not the extent) of some of her behaviors, her actions didn't make sense. Especially since she's now 32 years old. She acts like a spoiled, self-centered jerk with her mindless need to rebel, her lies and secrets, her manipulative behavior and her overt sexuality. Which is bad enough, but apparently she's also so sexy, so magnetic, and so amazing she attracts the devoted love and protection of a good man, and the sexual obsession of a kajillionaire. Her 8 year old daughter is more mature and stable than Clara.
Soon this powder keg of WTF blows up, and Clara's secrets are exposed. She's got to do some deep soul-searching, grow up and earn her HEA. But without possessing any real redemptive qualities, it was hard to believe and I just didn't care.
A predator stalks a cold northern Minnesotan town. There is talk of
wolves walking on two legs and attacking people in the deep woods.
Lauren Westlake, resourceful and determined F.B.I Agent, has found a
connection between the strange murders in the north and a case file
almost a hundred years old. Traveling to the cold north, she begins an
investigation that spirals deep into the darkness of mythology and
nightmares. Filled with creatures of the night and an ancient romance,
the revelation of who hunts beneath the moon is more grisly than anyone
could have imagined.

Review:
This was an interesting and fresh horror/mystery hybrid. The setting is a small town in Minnestoa during the deep dark cold of mid-winter, and the result is a creepy and almost claustrophobic atmosphere, perfect for reading in a warm bed on a winter's night. Lauren Westlake arrives in a great, poignant opening scene that establishes her as a tough federal agent. This persona is soon at odds with her behavior in the local bar, where the alcohol loosens her tongue, her professionalism, and her grip on her dignity. I think the intent was to show the two sides of Lauren but it's a little heavy-handed here and throughout the book.
But the story itself kept me reading and was really entertaining. The violent murders that seem to have been committed by a monster, the overwhelmed local police department, a mysterious stranger in town, and Lauren's reason for arriving in Locke are all part of a well-developed, intriguing twist on the werewolf legend. The thin line between human and monster is explored a bit against the backdrop of murder, mystery and horror. There's even a visit from Hecate to add a little fun to the mix.
My only real complaint is the very formal language, sometimes awkward phrasing, and the lack of contractions. As a result the dialogue feels stilted and slow - mentally I kept adding the contractions as I read to keep the pace moving along at a more natural speed.
Overall, a very enjoyable and atmospheric read.
Review:
Starkly original and freshly grim, Blackbirds is a unique urban fantasy featuring a terrified young woman trying to outrun herself and her "gift" of seeing people's deaths in crystal-clear detail. Miriam has been living on the run since she was a young teenager, and her life is really rough and scary. She sees herself as a scavenger to Death, taking only what she needs to keep running. In the past she's tried to prevent the deaths she sees, but she only ends up being the catalyst to the death, creating a sense of fatalism and inevitability. She's existing, but not living. The book doles out snippets of Miriam's past, right before her ability manifested, and it's as mean and sad and grim as her current life.
Miriam is a quirky woman, and when she talks the words flow out of her like lava from a volcano. The steady, thick river of stream-of consciousness profanity and uncensored thoughts, chock-full of brutal honesty and a fatalistic perspective is almost involuntary, and I thought this was a glimpse of Miriam's true self that she normally kept bottled up.
Blackbirds is really the chronicle of Miriam waking up from her self-centered, self-pitying life of horror and grief, and acknowledging a connection with another human being. What I loved is that Miriam doesn't turn chipper, kind, or gracious. This is a girl with a brittle, rough center to match her exterior. But her journey from passive witness to fighting participant, also mirrors her first real attempt to confront herself and what's inside of her. She's slowly figuring out that she can't control it, but she can control how she reacts to her gift.
As tough and harsh as Blackbirds is, I found it compelling and fascinating. I had to keep reading to learn about Miriam's past, and to find out how she was involved in her vision of Louis' death.
A unique, powerful and original book - highly recommended.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">Release week special! Just $2.99 until February 17, 2014. Every Second With You is the sequel to the bestselling edgy new adult novel The Thrill of It.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">

Every
Second With You = Sex. Love. Addiction. Heartache. Pain. And Hope.

In the
sequel to the bestselling new adult romance THE THRILL OF IT, Harley and Trey
face new challenges that will make battling blackmail, sex addiction, and a
virgin call girl past look easy…

I used to think love was a lie. Now I
know it’s real, powerful, and I don’t want to lose it…But my future scares me,
and there’s no way this can be happening, especially since I’ve finally broken
free from all the people who wanted pieces of me. I don’t even know how to start
over, but I have to find a way. So when I discover what my mother’s been keeping
from me, it doesn’t make me hate her. It gives me hope for a new life, outside
of New York. But the ties that bind me to this city are so strong, sometimes
they are chains. If only I could leave with…

Trey...

I will do
anything for her. She owns me, heart, mind and body. But when Harley tells me
this, I am rocked to the core, and terrified of what happens next. Especially
when now it’s not her past that chases me, it’s someone from my own. And that
someone is messing with my head when I’m trying to be strong for Harley. But all
I really want is to escape with the girl I love…For the rest of our
lives.

How can you move forward when the past keeps chasing you?
promise. Lauren lives in California with her husband, children, and

Georgiana Darcy's Diary Blurb:
Mr. Darcy's younger sister searches for her own happily-ever-after...

The year is 1814, and it is
springtime at Pemberley. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have married. But now a
new romance is in the air, along with high fashion, elegant manners,
scandal, deception, and the wonderful hope of a true and lasting love.

Shy Georgiana Darcy has been
content to remain unmarried, living with her brother and his new bride.
But Elizabeth and Darcy's fairy-tale love reminds Georgiana daily that
she has found no true love of her own. And perhaps never will, for she
is convinced the one man she secretly cares for will never love her in
return. Georgiana's domineering aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, has
determined that Georgiana shall marry, and has a list of eligible
bachelors in mind. But which of the suitors are sincere, and which are
merely interested in Georgiana's fortune? Georgiana must learn to trust
her heart--and rely on her courage--for she also faces the return of the
man who could ruin her reputation and spoil a happy ending, just when
it finally lies within her grasp.
A story of hope and second chances in Regency London.
Kitty Bennet is finished with love and romance. She lost her one-time
fiancé in the Battle of Waterloo, and in the battle’s aftermath saw more
ugliness and suffering than she could bear. Staying with her Aunt and
Uncle Gardiner in London for the winter, Kitty throws her energies into
finding a husband for her hopelessly bookish sister Mary, and
discovering whatever mysterious trouble is worrying her sister Jane. But
then she meets Mr. Lancelot Dalton, a handsome clergyman with a
shadowed past—and discovers that though she may be finished with love,
love may not be at all finished with her.
Kitty Bennet’s Diary is Volume 3 of the Pride and Prejudice Chronicles.
It can be read alone, but refers to events from Volumes 1 and 2.

REVIEWS
Georgiana Darcy's Diary:
It's delightful to catch up with Georgiana after Pride and Prejudice. Living at Pemberley with her brother and Elizabeth, she's become a more self-assured young woman, and is conquering her shyness. She's also trying to put her youthful mistakes with Wickham behind her, as she navigates the matchmaking waters her Aunt de Bourgh has tossed her in. But being surrounded by fortune hunters only makes her dream of Edward Fitzwilliam more and she wants the kind of true love Darcy and Elizabeth share. But Edward is not recovered from his physical and mental wounds. Plagued by PTSD, he feels he has nothing to offer Georgiana. Watching Georgiana gain confidence and come into her own, as she tries to draw her cousin Anne out from under the iron OCD thumb of her mother, had me silently cheering them on. An unexpected twist gave even more emotional depth to these characters, and made me feel pity for even Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
Overall, the machinations of her Aunt, the societal expectations of a wealthy
young woman, and the ever-present conversational dance of manners is a
lot of fun, and I felt the tone and vibe would have made Jane Austen
happy.

Pemberley to Waterloo:
Pemberley to Waterloo picks up where Volume 1 leaves off, with Georgiana and Edward happily engaged. But Edward soon receives orders to fight Napoleon, and Georgiana arranges to travel to Brussels with Kitty Bennet to be closer to him. What starts out as an adventure soon turns into an experience of the horrors of war. The balls and social reveling on the eve of battle are soon contrasted with the gritty reality of fighting, as Georgiana and Kitty realize that they are just a few miles from the fighting. When the injured and dying stagger through the streets of Brussels and are left, Georgiana and Kitty rise to the occasion and care for the wounded and sit with the dying. As the fates of their loved ones are learned, both women are forever changed.
I felt that this book was quite removed from the tone of traditional Jane Austen novels, but I loved it. Georgiana and Kitty grow up fast in this novel. Watching these pampered, upper-class women suffer through the horrors of the aftermath of battle and yet stay and take care of the soldiers, was a test of their characters that changed them forever, giving them a perspective few have, and an appreciation for life that few truly enjoy.

Kitty Bennet's Diary:
A newly somber Kitty, suffering from both personal regrets and nightmares of Brussels after the battle of Waterloo, has resolved to keep a diary and become a better person. She is determined to help her somber sister Mary find a husband, and to personally avoid the foolishness of love at all costs. I really enjoyed this book. It felt like a comfortable return to the world of Pride and Prejudice, with familiar characters, the world of class, manners, balls and social requirements. There's drama caused by misunderstanding and jealousy, and the return of a truly shallow and reprehensible rake. My favorite part of this novel was watching Kitty forget about herself and just BE herself. Kitty shines here, shrugging off her foolish and scandalous past behavior and letting her kind heart lead her actions. I loved seeing the sweet, funny, nutty scenarios Kitty keeps finding herself in, and of course that's when Lance turns up as well, seeing Kitty for who she truly is. The scenarios may have been improbable and unlikely but this book was always delightful!
‘THE MOST SAVAGE OF BEASTS IS TO BE FOUND WITHIN THE HEART OF MAN.’

It is 1817, Regency England. Thomas Blackdown, a thieftaker and
ex-soldier, receives word that his brother and father are in deep
trouble and need his help. But Blackdown is a man that harbours bitter
memories; a man banished from his homeland because of a terrible
accident, and so is reluctant to return to his ancestral home in
Somerset.

However, once there he discovers that his brother has been savagely
murdered – torn to shreds, some say by a mythical creature the locals
call the Blackdown Beast. Thomas Blackdown does not believe in any
creature of fantasy, and is determined to bring to justice his brother’s
murderer, encouraged by his brother’s fiancé, Julianne Tresham, and
aided by the faithful servant Addison.

But Blackdown is quickly drawn deep into a complicated web of
deceit, power, greed and murder involving Lord Tresham – Julianne’s
father – and the cold Sir Peter Lansdowne. What is the mysterious
Lupercal Club? Why do ex-soldiers go missing from Commodore Pettigrew’s
travelling theatre? What strange thing is happening in Devilbowl Wood
where Blackdown’s brother was found mutilated? And does a savage,
hellish creature really prowl the night?

Soon, Blackdown must fight for his own life and face up to his
demons both imaginary and real. He will need all his wits and skills to
survive if he is ever to discover the shocking truth behind the evil
that has penetrated as far as the government itself.

Set in Regency England following the end of the Napoleonic wars,
‘Blackdown’ is D. M. Mitchell at his creative best, crafting a
believable world of strange, larger-than-life characters, with his
trademark intricate plotting and surprise ending, it is a novel that is a
rollicking good thriller, horror and adventure story rolled into one.

And in Thomas Blackdown, Mitchell has given us a hero like no other before – a D’Arcy with bite, a Bond in breeches…

Review:
What a fantastic book! It's a mystery, thriller, suspense, and historical all wrapped up in one incredibly enjoyable package.
Thomas Blackdown was kicked out of his ancestral home at the age of 13, and he has spent the last 20 years becoming a battle-hardened soldier and trying to forget his past. He's a fascinating man. Although disowned by his titled father and treated with disdain and hate, Thomas has retained his sense of honor, nobility and compassion. He's a hard man, but a just one. Out of the army now, he's making a living as a successful thieftaker, making use of his skills. He's a mix of undercover operative, spy, soldier, and is basically just existing.
Returning home after such a long time, he's shocked at the condition of his family estate, and discovers that his brother has died since sending the letter two years ago. He's persuaded to investigate his younger brother's death, which seems to have been caused by a legendary monster that dwells in the deep woods nearby. This Blackdown Beast is apparently on the rampage again, and the violently shredded sheep may just be the beginning, as Thomas learns that several ex-soldiers working for a traveling entertainment troupe have disappeared as well. He also learns that his father was falsely accused of treason, an old friend and neighbor is buying up the Blackdown property for reasons of his own, and a new nobleman in the area has created an armed police force that seem to threaten and intimidate more than they keep the peace. The more Thomas investigates, the stranger and more connected these mysteries become, and before long he's threatened and then attacked.
The cast of characters is extensive and intriguing, and their lives are prisms through which life in 1817 Regency England and the village of Blackdown is viewed. His father's lawyer may be a parasitic manipulator, the kindly neighbor may have ulterior motives, the traveling troupe members are hiding a dangerous secret, and the town is preparing for an ancient pagan festival connected to the Blackdown Beast. The overwhelming power and impunity of the local nobles is in stark contrast to the desperation and grueling nature of the servants, townspeople and traveling entertainers.
This novel is like a beautiful piece of classical music. The characters are the orchestra, and the author the conductor - he appreciates and develops each instrument in the orchestra, carefully guiding their actions to create a richly interwoven tapestry of mystery. The sense of dread and rapidly encroaching danger increases with each page, and by the time I got to the shocking twist near the end I could not put the book down!
A simply outstanding story!

Blurb:
When Marcus Lord Cheyne takes possession of his inheritance, he is not
expecting the castle to be haunted by a ghost—especially not such a
beautiful ghost as Rowena. As for Rowena, her biggest problem is not
that she is trapped within the walls of Castle Ravenswych, which she is,
but that she is not, in fact, actually deceased…

Review:
Originally published in 1992, this Regency romance novella is quite charming and has an unusually feisty heroine. It begins with spunky and supremely annoyed young Rowena fighting off the extremely unwelcome advances of her slimy guardian just weeks after her uncle's death. After Rowena knocks him down with a crystal decanter, he chases her into a dark forest where she has the presence of mind to fake her own death by drowning. After the inquest he returns to London, and Rowena takes up secret residence in the castle under the protection of the elderly housekeeper and her husband. She must stay hidden for one year. When she turns 21, her guardian will have no control over her. Her only relative, a second cousin who inherited the title and castle, is a soldier off fighting.
Rowena was a lot of fun to read. She's practical, tough and smart. She loves the housekeeping couple, who treat her like a daughter. A refreshing change from heroines of traditional Regency romances, particularly as this book was originally published in 1992.
When Lord Cheyne returns to claim his inheritance and recover from severe injuries, Rowena has a hard time staying hidden. And soon Rowena and Lord Cheyne are left alone in the castle for an entire weekend. (By now I'm wondering how dirty this huge castle must be, with just an elderly couple as caretakers, and 2 girls who come from the village 2x a week to clean.)
At this point the story took a left turn at Albuquerque, when smart and steady Rowena falls madly in love with Lord Cheyne while nursing him back from the brink of death. One of the first things she does upon finding him feverish and barely alive in his bed is kiss his scars, imagining the pain and loss he has suffered as a soldier. They are definitely soulmates and true loves, because he senses her love through his delirium, of course. Luckily he remains feverish all weekend so he's not entirely sure if Rowena is real or a ghost, further protecting her secret for the last few days before her 21st birthday.
Luckily there were only a few pages left at this point, or I might have stopped reading. The charm of the earlier story, and fresh take on a Regency heroine, were somewhat spoiled by Rowena's drastic discovery of her true love and the bizarre emotional trip of her and Lord Cheyne.
Review:
Released on January 7, 2014, this is the 25th installment of the Dark Series, and the 2nd in an internal trilogy (Dark Lycan, Dark Wolf, Dark Blood). It's also the very much anticipated story of Skyler and Dimitri. Fans of this series have been oh-so-curious to see how Christine Feehan handled the very sensitive nature of Skyler's abusive past with her becoming the claimed lifemate to Dimitri, and Dark Wolf does not disappoint.
Let me say first that this is NOT the book to start with if you're new to the Dark series. Many of these books are easily read as a standalone, despite the multi-book plots and storylines, but Dark Wolf is best enjoyed if you know the entire backstory to Skyler.

It's interesting how Skyler has struck such a chord among fans of the Dark series. The author is not shy when it comes to pretty gruesome and detailed torture scenes, and yet Skyler's background, while not the most physically horrific, was certainly the most emotional because she was a helpless child. Which is why I think Ms. Feehan was brilliant to begin Dark Wolf with Skyler as a strong, brave and determined woman, who has marshaled her friends to save her lifemate, risking her own life in the process. These acts allow Skyler to shed her identity as a victim and become a powerful woman who can take charge and kick ass if needed. Her past is always there, but with Dimitri's help, Skyler has learned to not let her abuse define her. Her triumph is amazing and inspiring - she grows up and into her potential while we cheer her on.
This review won't go into the details of the story because, let's be honest, Feehan's Dark books are all very similar. She has created the fascinating and familiar world of Carpathians, and readers either love or hate the books. Personally, I find this new trilogy within this long-running series to be a fresh and welcome perspective. Dark Wolf has also allowed the new generation to take center stage, as Skyler, Paul and Josef work together to rescue Dimitri. It feels like a natural cycle, as the younger generation proves themselves and take their place in society.

Add in the political intrigue and traitorous machinations of a faction of Lycans and Sange Rau, and the Carpathians have new battles to fight. And really, how hot is Zev Hunter? Love him!
Somewhere in the hinterlands of Alaska, among the millions of sprawling
acres that comprise “The Park,” a young National Park Ranger has gone
missing. When the detective sent after him also vanishes, the Anchorage
DA’s department must turn to their reluctant former investigator, Kate
Shugak. Shugak knows The Park because she’s of The Park, an Aleut who
left her home village of Niniltna to pursue education, a career, and the
righting of wrongs. Kate’s search for the missing men will take her
from self-imposed exile back to a life she’d left behind, and
face-to-face with people and problems she'd hoped never to confront
again.

The first novel in the popular Kate Shugak Series, A Cold Day for
Murder established Dana Stabenow as a new voice in Alaskan mystery
writing, and earned her an Edgar Award.

Review:

What a great mystery! I'm making up a new subgenre in honor of this book - ice noir. It's a fascinating mystery set in a cold, unforgiving and beautiful Alaskan park. Kate Shugak is a young woman haunted by the violence and evil she encountered as a state investigator. After the last abuser she discovered slit her throat, she quit and returned to her homestead in the Alaskan wilderness.
When we meet Kate, she's living in beautiful isolation. Coming home to lick her wounds and deal with her memories doesn't guarantee peace, though, and A Cold Day for Murder starts with Kate's former boss and a sadly under-dressed FBI agent snowmobiling to her home to ask her to investigate two disappearances. Her investigation quickly leads her into the complicated politics of the Aleuts, her powerful and manipulative grandmother, the local townspeople and the Alaskan government. Lots of people resented the enthusiastic young outsider and park ranger who disappeared first, and sorting through their motivations and alibis stirs up Kate's old life and relationships, and not usually with happy results.
She may be the ultimate insider, as an Aleut and a local with powerful family ties going back generations, but that doesn't ensure a warm welcome and pretty soon someone's taking shots at her. It's a small town, and Kate realizes that somebody she knows is probably a killer.

Kate's life has mirrored the land she calls home - unsentimental, unforgiving, and sometimes brutal. The descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness and way of life were fascinating. It's cold and remote, and people must depend on themselves and each other. The long cold winters bring boredom, creating a lot of alcoholism and bed-hopping as people just endure and wait. There's a real sense of melancholy as well, because for all the waiting around these people are doing, the end of winter doesn't really change their lives. It just provides a brief window of time to make money to get them through the next winter, continuing the cycle. The book reminded me of Smilla's Sense of Snow, for the mystery and the stark, unsentimental beauty of the setting.

This book is beautifully written, starkly visual, and a really solid mystery. Heck, it won the Edgar!

I'm so excited to have discovered Dana Stabenow and her Kate Shugak mysteries (there are 20 in this series alone).

“When life threatens perfect, it’s time to step up
and kick life in the balls.”

Ella's perfect moment was taken from her in the worst possible way. Humiliated,
heartbroken and absolutely determined not to allow her heart be destroyed for a
second time, she builds an ice wall around her heart.

Preston has known that he was in love with his big sister's best friend since
the age of fifteen. Over ten years on, and an opportunity to be her knight in
shining armour is too good to miss. Putting his heart on the line, he's on a
mission to show Ella that the perfect moment is possible.

Ella's instinct is to run when she realises her feelings for her bestie's
little brother may just run a little bit deeper than just friends. But if she
can't run, she'll try every trick in the book to shake off his affection and
realign his feelings.

She’s already had her perfect moment, and there is no chance she'll let her
heart thaw for Preston. No matter how good he looks in the firefighter's
Christmas calendar.

you to trust me with your heart.” My words had her smiling and her eyes
glistening. I kissed her lightly on the lips. “Then, I plan for us to spend the
rest of our lives together, having you in my bed whenever I want and having fun

always loved her, doted on her, I’d never considered having a family. I was too
young for shit like that, but hell, with El now in my arms, all I could think
about was taking her bare and hoping to hell to have some of my swimmers take,
DEATHBLOW Blurb:
A brand new fast-paced suspense from New York Times Bestselling Author Dana Marton. Fans of Linda Howard and Catherine Coulter will love this tightly plotted suspense that's intricately interwoven with a touching romance.

--Deathblow
begins at Mach 2 with a heart-stopping plunge off a bridge while the
hero is handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser. Then, it gets complicated.

Joe
and Wendy are a "movie of the week" couple - a football hero turned
small town cop, and a single mom - tossed together with a lot of sex
appeal and charisma. Dana Marton takes these basic components for a
happy-ever-after and turns the story on its head. Hiding out in Broslin,
PA was working pretty well for Wendy Belle until Cop Casanova took her
under his protection. While Joe is trying to find and corral Wendy's
wild-cannon, abusive ex-boyfriend, he's also working undercover to
expose a dirty cop. And he's hunting the murderer of an old friend. Not
only are these three threads intertwined, each one leads to other
mysteries that also weave in and out of the main stories.

Deathblow,
the latest entry in Dana Marton's Broslin Series, is impressive twice
over - the mystery/suspense is marvelously complex while the romance is
funny, endearing, and rich.

AND

She's also giving away 3 Kindle e-copies of DEATHSCAPE, an edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense that will keep you reading late into the night! 4.5 stars on 335 reviews!
Blurb:
After a near-death experience, artist Ashley Price is compelled to paint
visions of the dead. Then she paints a man buried alive and,
recognizing the surroundings, she rushes to save him.

Instead
of being grateful to her for rescuing him, Detective Jack Sullivan
accuses her of being in league with a serial killer. He swears he will
put her behind bars. Except, the more time he spends with her, the more
he falls under her spell. Can he trust her, or is he walking into
another deadly trap?
Blurb:
A thrilling new full-size novel from the author of DEATHSCAPE (#1 Amazon Romantic Suspense Bestseller!) Here is Murph's story, at last, due to reader demand.

The only person who can identify the most notorious hit man in the
country, Kate Bridges is running for her life. Murphy Dolan is in the
Army Reserves, returning from his 2nd tour of duty, only to find a
stranger hiding in his house. She's scared spitless. He's completely
burned-out on violence. Neither of them has any trust left to give.

Read my Review HERE. I LOVED Deathwatch, and most especially Murph. He is my all-time favorite hero, and that's saying a lot because he has a lot of competition - Carpathians, KGI dudes, Ghostwalkers and many, many more. But Murph is the one!

Just 99 cents!
