WHERE DARK LYCAN ENDED, DARK WOLF BEGINS...
BOOK NUMBER 25 IN CHRISTINE FEEHAN'S ACCLAIMED CARPATHIAN SERIES
#1 New York Times
bestselling author Christine Feehan now delivers her most eagerly
awaited novel of all—ten years in the making—in the “the erotic,
gripping series that has defined an entire genre” (J. R. Ward).
In Dark Lycan,
Christine Feehan journeyed into the heart of the Carpathians, and into
the souls of two lifemates stirred by the flush of passion and the
threat of annihilation. In Dark Wolf, the breathtaking story continues
as the bonds of family are imperiled, and the fate of two lovers lies
hidden in the seductive shadows between life and death.
Skyler Daratrazanoff always
recognized the miracle that was Dimitri Tirunul, a man beyond any dream
that had ever engaged her nights. But she was human. Vulnerable. He was
Carpathian. Nearly immortal. She was nineteen. He was an ancient. Yet
she held half his soul, the light to his darkness. Without her, he would
not survive. Caught between the two warring species, Dimitri has spent
centuries hunting the undead to keep his people free, and humans safe.
He had survived honorably when others had chosen to give up their souls.
But now, marked for extermination by the Lycans, Dimitri found himself
alone, and fearing for his life. But salvation was coming
No Lycan would ever suspect
someone like Skyler to dare mount a secret rescue operation. A teenage
girl. A human of untested abilities. But she had something no one else
had. She was predestined for Dimitri—as he was for her. And there was
nothing stronger for Skyler than her desire to see her life-dream come
true. Whatever the risk.
Review:
Released on January 7, 2014, this is the 25th installment of the Dark Series, and the 2nd in an internal trilogy (Dark Lycan, Dark Wolf, Dark Blood). It's also the very much anticipated story of Skyler and Dimitri. Fans of this series have been oh-so-curious to see how Christine Feehan handled the very sensitive nature of Skyler's abusive past with her becoming the claimed lifemate to Dimitri, and Dark Wolf does not disappoint.
Let me say first that this is NOT the book to start with if you're new to the Dark series. Many of these books are easily read as a standalone, despite the multi-book plots and storylines, but Dark Wolf is best enjoyed if you know the entire backstory to Skyler.
It's interesting how Skyler has struck such a chord among fans of the Dark series. The author is not shy when it comes to pretty gruesome and detailed torture scenes, and yet Skyler's background, while not the most physically horrific, was certainly the most emotional because she was a helpless child. Which is why I think Ms. Feehan was brilliant to begin Dark Wolf with Skyler as a strong, brave and determined woman, who has marshaled her friends to save her lifemate, risking her own life in the process. These acts allow Skyler to shed her identity as a victim and become a powerful woman who can take charge and kick ass if needed. Her past is always there, but with Dimitri's help, Skyler has learned to not let her abuse define her. Her triumph is amazing and inspiring - she grows up and into her potential while we cheer her on.
This review won't go into the details of the story because, let's be honest, Feehan's Dark books are all very similar. She has created the fascinating and familiar world of Carpathians, and readers either love or hate the books. Personally, I find this new trilogy within this long-running series to be a fresh and welcome perspective. Dark Wolf has also allowed the new generation to take center stage, as Skyler, Paul and Josef work together to rescue Dimitri. It feels like a natural cycle, as the younger generation proves themselves and take their place in society.
Add in the political intrigue and traitorous machinations of a faction of Lycans and Sange Rau, and the Carpathians have new battles to fight. And really, how hot is Zev Hunter? Love him!
