The Little Free Library - An Awesome Concept to Share Books and The Love of Reading - Have You Heard About This?

The Little Free Library is a genius, grass-roots concept for creating small, mini, free-standing libraries in communities.  They are built, placed and stocked by motivated volunteers and look kind of like giant bird feeders of literary goodness.

The Little Free Library began in Wisconsin, the concept of two men named Todd Bol and Rick Brooks.
Their website is http://www.littlefreelibrary.org/

I think this concept is best suited to urban type areas.  Small towns often have libraries that are centrally located.   But larger towns and cities, while having impressively larger libraries, do not always have satellite libraries in different neighborhoods.  Sending out book mobiles is great, but only works for those who can meet the mobile during the period of time it's in their neighborhood.  So what do all the people do who would like to borrow books but can't make it to the main library or a mobile library during their open hours?  This Little Library would fill that vacancy nicely!

It is operated on an honor system.  Free access to anyone to borrow a book, and anyone can donate books to the Little Library.  Think about all the books we buy and then pass on to friends, or donate to Goodwill.  We could stock these Little Free Libraries instead!

There are all kinds of ideas for theme libraries and information for getting started, ie. sponsors, placement, and obtaining proper permission/permits.

The website offers advice for starting a Little Library, and also sells kits to make one, or buy one premade.
