Vampire Moon (Vampire For Hire Series #2) by J. R. Rain

Publisher's Blurb:  Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.
Now in VAMPIRE MOON, sequel to MOON DANCE, private investigator Samantha Moon finds herself hunting down a powerful crime lord and protecting an innocent woman from her ruthless ex-husband — all while two very different men vie for her heart. And as the stakes grow higher and her cases turn personal, Samantha Moon will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent and bring two cold-blooded killers to justice — her own brand of justice.

Review:  Here is some great advice -go to BarnesandNoble.com or Amazon.com and buy an e-book set of the Samantha Moon novels (Vampire For Hire) or any other J.R. Rain bundle for just $2.99.  I reviewed  Moon Dance previously on this blog (loved it!) and finally got around to finding the sequel, and discovered that J.R. Rain's novels have been bundled into e-book sets at a fantastic price.  He has several novels available and has co-authored books with more well-known authors such as Piers Anthony.
Reading these novels is so easy - I slip right into the world he has created and never feel like I'm reading.   It's living vicariously and it's fantastic.  I can't put them down.  His writing feels natural, the characters are so real they feel like friends, and the world of Samantha Moon is a nonstop thrill ride.  Plus, I just like Sam.  She is smart, and funny, and finally starting to live again after being violently attacked and "awaking" as a vampire six years ago.
In Vampire Moon, Sam is living in a hotel while her dirtbag ex-husband has the kids and his slutty secretary  at their home. Danny has threatened Sam with exposure if she tries to get custody and has almost completely cut her off from her children.  Meanwhile, Sam has to work to pay her bills, and she has two cases.  One is a grieving man whose wife was a murder witness and killed to keep her from testifying.  And the other is a woman whose ex-husband has tried repeatedly to kill her, even though he is now in prison for his last attempt. As Sam plans on bringing both men justice (although not necessarily TO justice - she is getting more comfortable with using her powers to get rid of really evil people, which makes her worry about losing her humanity). To add to the stress in her life, her vampire powers seem to be expanding, and Kingsley wants more from their relationship than Sam thinks she is ready for.  Fang, her on-line best friend and confidant is ready for the next step as well.
Sam handles all of these issues with her usual intelligent, sarcastic humor, and plows ahead doing the best she can - which is pretty damn good, what with having super strength and powers.  But she is handicapped by her vampirism as well, and feels trapped at times by her circumstances.  While she doesn't spend a lot of time wallowing in her emotions, her pain and frustrations are very real and well-described.  I mean, she's like the rest of us, even if she's a vampire - life goes on and things have to get done.
The story is fast-paced, the characters complex and realistic, and there are all kinds of neat things going on beneath the surface.  These stories are entertaining, fun and fast, and I can't wait to read the rest.
